Mahone yang bersekolah di Lady Bird Johnson High School mulai mengupload videonya di Youtube pada Juni 2010 bersama temannya Alex Constancio. Ia memulai upload music video pada Januari 2011 dan mulai terkenal secara online. Di tahun yang sama pada bulan Oktober, ia posting video cover lagu Justin Bieber yang berjudul Mistletoe.

28 Agustus 2012 menjadi hari dimana ia mendatangi kontrak dengan Chase/Universal Republic Records. Single pertamanya yang berjudul 11:11 dirilis pada tahun 2011. Masih di tahun yang sama, ia juga merilis single keduanya yang diberi judul Say Somethin.

Pria yang juga mahir memainkan gitar dan piano ini terpilih sebagai penyanyi pembuka dalam konser Taylor Swift, Red Tour. Tidak hanya di dunia musik, ia mulai merambah dunia fashion dengan menandatangani perjanjian untuk menjadi "Teen Ambassador" bagi clothing line milik Lil Wayne, Trukfit. Ia juga sempat menjadi bintang iklan McDonald dan Hot Nuts. Di tahun 2013, Mahone terpilih menjadi Digital and Brand Strategist untuk FlavorSplash, Aquafina.
